HEART OF THE MATTER…
Imagine reaching for the same carton of milk as a beautiful stranger and finding your happily ever after…
Sounds like a scene from a romcom, doesn’t it?
But before you roll our eyes, let me tell you about Ben.
Ben was a client. And like many of you, he was tired of endless swiping and ghosting on dating apps.
He just wanted to meet women the ‘old fashioned’ way.
Together, we worked on his confidence, started experimenting, and after a couple of months, he found his sweet spot…
THE GROCERY STORE 🥦
That’s right! Ben started meeting women at grocery stores on a weekly basis. It became his go-to. And it worked almost every time.
Some may raise an eyebrow at this strategy, but I say it's all about intention. Whether you're at a bar, on apps, or between the produce and cereal aisles, what difference does it make? They're all places where you could bump into someone interesting.
While I can't promise that you'll find your soulmate next to the frozen peas, I can say there’s a solid chance you could land a fun date!
So how does this all play out in real life? Just look at Ben.
He takes a couple of trips to the grocery store each week, interacts casually with several women, and usually lands at least one phone number.
On average, that's 4 new numbers a month, all found in the most organic way possible (pun absolutely intended).
In today's dating landscape, those are some pretty stellar stats. Plus, he never runs out of snacks🧃
How would you like to turn your grocery runs into a dating playground, knowing exactly what to say and do?
Grab your cart, gents—coz we’re going aisle hopping for your next date! 😍
🛒 The Grocery Store Shortcut!
In most scenarios, landing a date or phone number usually involves 3 key stages:
1 - Break the ice: Start a light conversation.
2 - Carry on the conversation: Keep it interesting!
3 - Shoot your shot: Get her digits or ask her out.
This process can take hours at a bar, and days (or even weeks!) on an app.
At grocery stores however, you often get to skip the longest part—the middle. No drawn-out conversations are expected between the kiwis and the kale, so you get to shoot your shot much faster.
It's kinda like express check-out.
The 5/5 Supermarket Approach
Ready to swap your long game for a lightning round? The 5/5 Supermarket Approach is our 5-step, 5-minute playbook to Aisle Romance. Each step builds on the next, so pay attention!
Step 1 - Send a friendly signal 👋🏽
Spotted someone you're curious about? Perfect. But no need to hover over her; you're not a mystery shopper, after all!
Be mindful of her personal space while signaling your interest in a respectful manner, like making a bit of eye contact and offering a genuine smile. Maybe even give her a nod or a casual wave.
This approach sets a friendly tone and allows you to assess her level of interest before taking the next step.
Step 2 - Say something relatable 💬
Time to break the ice. Don’t go for the low hanging fruit by commenting on her looks, it’s not the place for that. You've got a whole store's worth of conversation starters right in front of you. Check out what's in her cart, in the bins, or along the shelves as a starting point.
Here are some examples:
"Hey, was looking for that granola 😅 Where'd you find it?"
"You're the second person I've seen grabbing that snack today 😊 Is it that good?"
"Can you believe these prices, $8 for oranges - crazy 🤪!”
"An apple a day keeps the doctor away, right? At least that’s the plan 😉 "
You'll notice not every suggestion here ends with a question. That's because we're still in the Icebreaker stage and we wanna keep it light.
This subtle approach works in your favor, it gives you an easy out to part ways then and there if needed. If she doesn’t smile, laugh, or say something back, you can simply wish her a good day and move on, easy-peasy!
Step 3 - Assess her body language 🤔
You've only got a moment here, so it's crucial to get a quick read on her body language.
🟢 Green lights:
She stops pushing her cart or stops shopping to face you.
She starts chatting, smiling, or says something back.
🔴 Red lights:
Even if she answers you or shares an awkward smile, her back is turned, and she continues walking away.
Anything obvious, like silence, ignores you, doesn’t engage.
If you're getting green lights, great, move to step 4! But if it's a no-go, no worries—just wish her a nice day and carry on.
You’ll get better at making these assessments quicker over time. Each one is a learning experience!
4 - Introduce yourself and create trust 🫱🏽🫲🏾
Love 'em or hate 'em, dating apps have one feature everyone loves… a little bio for context! Borrow from that by introducing yourself and sharing a slice of your life 🍕. It adds a layer of trust and gives her something to engage with.
Here are some examples:
"I'm Ben, by the way. Working from home has turned me into a snack fiend! Seriously, it's a double-edged sword. Trying to make better choices this week."
“Unlike me, you look like you belong in this aisle! Mind helping me for a sec? Not sure which protein powder to choose… I’m Ben by the way.”
"My name is Ben, by the way. Been binging Masterchef with my dog, and now I’m out here buying stuff I’ll probably never use again!”
"So, I'm Ben, by the way. My sister put me on a smoothie kick, so here I am, staring down the frozen fruits. Any combinations to suggest?"
“I’m Ben, by the way. Having some friends over for a barbecue this weekend. Stocking up coz they eat everythinggg. Do you live in the area?”
“Been eating far too much takeout from [insert local resto here], but I'm taking a break to try some healthier lunches this week. I’m Ben by the way, what’s your name?"
Pro tip: The bolded words aren't just filler; they're important details. Sharing that you have a pet, a job, friends, family, or that you're familiar with the area signals more trust.
5 - Shoot your shot 🏀
By now, you should find yourself in some casual, friendly banter. You're right where you need to be to make your move.
➡️ Offering to exchange social media is low-stakes and comfortable for everyone. Here are some examples:
"Well, this has been nice… I'll let you get back to your shopping now 😅 Would you be open to connecting on Instagram?"
"Didn't expect to have this much fun shopping for bread 😅 Hey, would you wanna exchange Instagrams?”
➡️ If you're vibing and feeling a bit bolder, you might consider stepping up the ask:
"You seem really nice… would you be open to exchanging numbers? Or I can give you mine if that’s easier…"
➡️ And if the stars have totally aligned, and you're both really hitting it off:
"Are you busy after this? I'll be done in about 10 minutes if you wanna grab a coffee… no pressure!"
